Easter Traditions

Happy Easter!

As the tradition goes. Church bells ring all the way to the Vatican on Good Friday. Taking with them the grief of Christ’s crucifixion. Returning on Easter morning just in time to celebrate the resurrection. Staying true to custom, French church bells do not ring from Good Friday to Easter Sunday. (It’s been a quiet weekend!)

Cloche volants, or Flying Bells, also return with chocolate and died eggs for the children. Doing the Easter bunny’s hide-the-eggs work.

With Catholicism at the core of France, all culinary symbols on this day reflect Christ’s recent events. Eggs representing rebirth (resurrection). Lamb shows sacrifice – mimicking that which was given up on Passover. And fish – the most ancient symbol – reminds Christians that they are followers of the son of god. Finding many forms; chocolate, pastries, breads, etc…these symbols bountifully line the streets of Paris.

Holding true to tradition – that of France and of our family’s. My friends and I are making Easter dinner. Roasted leg of lamb with mint. Fennel. Perhaps something of fish. Dyed Easter eggs. Desserts. And anything else from the market to help our jubilation.

Joyeuses Pâques!
